Image of Me and my Friends (2021)
digital collage
—
Obscured within the visual noise of contemporary digital life, an image of me and my friends is lost to more compelling media that stir up greater emotional responses. Our emotions can be ping-ponged between despair, fear, desire, and boredom within minutes online, rendering us muted and dull.
This digital collage seeks to harness these ideas of visual noise and emotional dysregulation creating an overall image where nothing of genuine value can be discerned. Through an assemblage of fragmented imagery, I aimed to create an overarching composition where forms remain elusive and intangible. Fragmented snippets of the digital landscape, such obscure internet adverts and abject car crash imagery are blended together, creating a collage that mirrors the fragmented yet borderless nature of contemporary online media.
Image of Me and My Friends serves as a reflection of our collective digital experience, one in which we find it increasingly challenging to extract ourselves from its harmful and frenzied media algorithms.
